Scholarships

For many years, the Air and Waste Management Association Great Basin Chapter has helped students with their education. Awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in the fields of air quality, waste management, environmental management/law, or sustainability is a focus of the Chapter.  Each year we commemorate the scholarship recipients at our annual dinner.

2025 Scholarship Winners

Michael Davies, Utah State University

Michael Davies is an undergraduate student at Utah State University's Bingham Research Center, where he studies Environmental Science and Sustainability.  His research explores how winter ozone forms in Utah's Uintah Basin, including how snow cover and limited data affect air quality forecasts.  Michael enjoys connecting science with practical solutions and he intends to pursue graduate studies in environmental science or data analytics to support clean air and sustainable policy.

Tanner Rima, University of Utah

Tanner Rima is a senior at the University of Utah pursuing a degree in Atmospheric Sciences.  He currently works with the Hart Research Group creating maps of historical smoke data to determine the relationship between elevated particulate matter concentrations and hospitalizations across the western United States.  His current focus involves air quality monitoring and expanding his own local weather website to report conditions across the Salt Lake Valley.  He intends to graduate with a bachelor's degree and then enter law school with an emphasis in environmental law.  His long-term aspirations include a career creating policy on sustainability and air quality.

Junjie Tang, Utah State University

Junjie Tang is a PhD candidate in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Utah State University. His research focuses on detecting, quantifying, and analyzing microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in the environment, with an emphasis on their transport and fate in water, soil, and plants. He is dedicated to advancing sustainable strategies that mitigate plastic pollution, improve water quality, and promote long-term environmental preservation. Beyond his research, Tang is committed to fostering a sustainable environment for future generations and inspiring emerging leaders in this field.
